Never seen anyone mentioned this, but the info your companion gather is solid, you get to see if the kingdom is united or falling apart, which lords are ripe for converting, how he feels about his liege.
Here are example: Kingdom of Nords. King Ragna. Swadia. King Harlaus. Rhodok. King Graveth.
Knowing this, I chose to rebel early from Wercherg, against the Nord (Vaegir was also weak) and avoid Rhodok.
When Rhodok declared war, I hunted down his most trusted lords and made their life miserable: Matheas, Reland, Tarchias, ignore the rest. This is what happened after about 3 months: Rhodok divided, 3 vassals defected to Nords.
My Kingdom. We were at war with all of them but they couldn't do much. Their lords were too weak, too poor and often ignore the marshal. I think by the end Ragna had a lot of land but hog them all and didn't even name a marshal.
