How to improve auto resolve outcomes?

I auto-resolve 90% of the fights I get into, what can I do for better results? Should I find 1-2 companions with high tactics skill and keep them in my party? Will that help? Do I have to assign them into any role? There is no slot for tactics role, is it enough if I just keep them in my party? As for sieges, should I keep a companion with high engineering skill and assign him in the engineering slot? I have a question about creating my own faction

So I just had to start a new save because my previous save bugged on me, so in my previous save I had my own faction and such but, because I never went back to the two people about the dragon banner quest, I couldn't leave my own kingdom.

So my question is if I give this banner to another kingdom am I still able to create and leave my own kingdom later in the game?
