How to improve auto resolve outcomes?

I auto-resolve 90% of the fights I get into, what can I do for better results? Should I find 1-2 companions with high tactics skill and keep them in my party? Will that help? Do I have to assign them into any role? There is no slot for tactics role, is it enough if I just keep them in my party? As for sieges, should I keep a companion with high engineering skill and assign him in the engineering slot? Suggestion to the devs - Crossbow Bucellarii

Basically bucellarii, in their current state, are a very redundant troop type. There are two other lvl 26 cav archers from two other factions that are of an "eastern" flavor. If the bucellarii upgraded from the lvl 21 crossbows and came equipped with a light crossbow (heavier crossbows can't be fired from horseback) this would create an interesting unit.
