How do I control troops in Bannerlord

I left this game for a few months in the hopes that it would get better, but evidently, it has not, as now that I've joined again, I can no longer command any of my troops. My only commands are to dictate where they march to, otherwise they just sit there and do nothing until I die.

Is this a new feature(?) or have I broken something?
