How to improve auto resolve outcomes?

I auto-resolve 90% of the fights I get into, what can I do for better results? Should I find 1-2 companions with high tactics skill and keep them in my party? Will that help? Do I have to assign them into any role? There is no slot for tactics role, is it enough if I just keep them in my party? As for sieges, should I keep a companion with high engineering skill and assign him in the engineering slot? Blue exclamation mark on brother. Bug? or did I miss something along the way?

I complete the rebuild clan quest, I rescued my young siblings, and the brother said to meet him at a settlement. I went to said settlement and he had an blue exclamation mark so I tried to interact with him and nothing new except for the generic dialogue kept coming up and the option to have him join the party. After joining at every small village I visit there is an exclamation mark on the walk around town option but the brother appears in the town and he is the only know with the mark with the same generic lines. Is this a bug? Did I miss something?
