Starting house AWOIAF

So I have a huge problem with this as im super indecisive. I started out as ironborn, ill be a raider, make people fear me, ill have a great time. However Im about 2 hours in and regret my choices, thinking I made a made move. I was looking at the troop tree, and noticed house targaryan. It seems the only way to get those troops in to start with that faction, are the troops worth getting? Ive already restarted my game give or take 30 times because I cannot make a choice. Also, is their a decent one handed axe in game? Most axes seem slow and not nearly as good as swords.
