So after some lengthy processes I've finally managed to mod Mount and Blade 2: Bannerlord! Below I'm going to catalog a list of things you'll need in order to put mods into your game. This is as much as guide for myself as for others.
- Mods can be found on the Nexus.
You can find mods elsewhere, but this is the 'go to' for a comprehensive list of mods. If you've modded other games, you'll probably recognise it! But this leads me onto the second point...
- Download the Vortex app.
It's an app created by Nexus mods for your pc. It'll manage the mods for you, to be able to easily enable and disable the mods at will. Once this is downloaded, you can head back to the Nexus page and when you go to the downloads page on a mod, click Mod Manager Download. This'll automatically download through Nexus!
- Check to see if the mods are functioning.
Sound's obvious, but if you get excited about finally finding the right mod for you, you could skip straight to downloading it. Go to the Posts/Comments section of a mod page! No point downloading a mod that'll just crash the second you load up the game.
- Make sure the file in your folders is set up correctly!
A lot of mods will download as: modules/#MOD1/modules/#MOD2/ etc...
You'll want to move the #MOD2 (obviously a placeholder name), folder into your actual Modules folder inside the game folder. Sometimes this'll happen automatically, but if you load up the launcher and it's not appearing, check this first!
- DLL files need unblocking.
Literally this. Head into the mod folder and unblock all the DLL files.
- Make sure you have the correct load order!
There's plenty of guides online to help you get the correct load order of your mods, but one of the most common is Harmony, ButterLib, UIExtenderEx and MCM, follow this image to see the order. These mods are the necessary mods for other mods to function.
- Make sure you have the correct version of Bannerlord.
You can disable automatic downloads on Steam if you've found a bunch of mods you're happy with. I'd recommend this and then update the game as/when you're ready (e.g. When the mods get updated).
This guide will probably get updated, but I think anything more than this is beginner level. I've also left out key information as there are better guides out there (e.g. how to install Vortex, how to set up bannerlord on Vortex), with which a quick Google search will deliver.
