How to improve auto resolve outcomes?

I auto-resolve 90% of the fights I get into, what can I do for better results? Should I find 1-2 companions with high tactics skill and keep them in my party? Will that help? Do I have to assign them into any role? There is no slot for tactics role, is it enough if I just keep them in my party? As for sieges, should I keep a companion with high engineering skill and assign him in the engineering slot? Any way to increase caravan party size?

So I’m around 2 years into the game (I think not really sure) and whenever I set up a caravan it gets taken down in less than 2 weeks, sometimes even less than a single week. Is there a way to increase the caravan sizes? Because seeing other nobles owning caravans with 50 troops that rarely get attacked seems kind of unfair compared to the shitty 30 man caravan
