Any way to assign only certain troop types to a formation?

Hi new player here, question in the title. Let's say I only want my Swordsmen in Formation 1, is there a way to do this with any granularity? I know there's the small icons which allow you to set "preferred types", but is there any way to do it with a bit of precision? Or a mod which allows this? Thanks in advance. Haven't been on since maybe June last year - What's the balancing like? Any 'necessary' mods?

Just curious what mods are still popular - I remember snowballing was a huge issue before.

Also the skill trees were broken and a mess.

Trying to play as close to vanilla as possible without it being broken/100s of hours of grind
