How to improve auto resolve outcomes?

I auto-resolve 90% of the fights I get into, what can I do for better results? Should I find 1-2 companions with high tactics skill and keep them in my party? Will that help? Do I have to assign them into any role? There is no slot for tactics role, is it enough if I just keep them in my party? As for sieges, should I keep a companion with high engineering skill and assign him in the engineering slot? How do i fight as sturgia on foot melee infantry only vs Khuzaits big armies?

Decided again to create a kingdom after few times playing as vassal but i got unlucky and after 5 mins khuzaits declared war on me..

Then they quickly came with 1500 army while i only had 1200 with no archers or cavalry because the troops i have in my party are mostly on foot warriors/axeman etc because i like to play that way. so is there even a chance in fighting?

When i wait, archers kill slowly my men, when i eventually charge most of my army runs after the horse archers leaving their back open for attack. ;/

Any tips or should i give up? :D I have usually no problems with other culture armies.
