How to improve auto resolve outcomes?

I auto-resolve 90% of the fights I get into, what can I do for better results? Should I find 1-2 companions with high tactics skill and keep them in my party? Will that help? Do I have to assign them into any role? There is no slot for tactics role, is it enough if I just keep them in my party? As for sieges, should I keep a companion with high engineering skill and assign him in the engineering slot? My manual save keeps dissapearing

It never happened before. Today I started playing and the save I had last night disapeared, only the autosaves were around.

I made a new sandbox game and when I saved it sometimes showed the file but if I spent too long between saves it wouldn't appear.

I quit the game for like an hour, came back and had the same issue. Only the autosaves were available.

Any reason why this happens or what should I do?
