Mods with only one Kingdom

I know the whole point of MnB is the chaos and politics of different kingdoms, BUT i was wondering if there are any mods with only one major kingdom or just 2 for a rebellion type playthrough. How do you protect your companions while in an army?

I've noticed that when you are part of an army or you are leading an army with fellow companions as party captains you have no option of keeping them on the backline and they tend to drop dead like flies. Is there a way to protect them that i am just missing or is it currently working as "intended"?
