Mods with only one Kingdom

I know the whole point of MnB is the chaos and politics of different kingdoms, BUT i was wondering if there are any mods with only one major kingdom or just 2 for a rebellion type playthrough. How do you keep valuable companions from dying?

I was attacking a castle recently and went to put up the ladder immediately as usual, but as I'm climbing, I look to my side and my surgeon with no combat skills is the first one up the walls. Luckily he didn't die in that battle but frequently in large battles I see my specialty companions (surgeon, engineer, scout) fighting on the front lines, and die. Is there some way you can keep them out of combat? Or is there some way to really boost their combat stats? I already dump tens of thousands of gold on armor for them but it doesn't seem to help.
