Party speed

I just started a new vlandian sandbox run. Usually I'm battania. I feel my party speed is to slow and am chasing bandits all the time. I got a lot of pack horses and verb working in trading to raise funds also fighting as mercenary. What are all the steps for maximum party speed optimizing as vlandian? Giving equipments to companions?

I was wondering if you can give your compainons weapons horses or armours like you could in warband? I hate to see Orothos the Surgeon wearing his bath robes and sweatpants in a line of legioneries and I would like my companions to survive more than 30 seconds in combat
