I hate Horse Archers

Why did I decide to sign up with the northern empire as a Merc whilst they were fighting the Khuzaits? I've never fought them before and the one time I don't go with a decent horse rider because I want to fight on foot, this happens. AI not taking cities and castles.

So none of the other factions in my sandbox game are have taken each others castles or towns. Or if they did it was recaptured right away. Is this normal or is my save fucked? Its around day 600 and ive been waiting for one of them to capture something so I can attack it but they simply aren't doing anything.
