Declared war on allied mercenaries on load save?

I’m playing as southern Empire, have the Hidden Hand as mercenaries with a couple of their parties in my army. I started a big battle late at night, so half way through quit to go to bed, knowing I’d saved right before the battle anyway like a good little save scummer. Now when I reload any of the precious 3 autosaves I immediately declare war on the Hidden Hand and their parties abandon my Army. Any tips for campaign in Bannerlord? (Unify the empire)

So I played bannerlord campaign without ever assembling the dragon banner. I want to do it in the next playthrough. I am thinking of unifying the Empire. I am wondering what is the best way to achieve that? I know the right answer is to not do it at all, I understand that. But I want to finish the campaign at least once.
So how do I go and do it? Which culture to start if I am to unify the empire? Also do I become a vassal or bide my time as mercenary? Which faction to attack first? How do I survive when everybody declares war at the same time? etc etc
Any help is appreciated.
