Declared war on allied mercenaries on load save?

I’m playing as southern Empire, have the Hidden Hand as mercenaries with a couple of their parties in my army. I started a big battle late at night, so half way through quit to go to bed, knowing I’d saved right before the battle anyway like a good little save scummer. Now when I reload any of the precious 3 autosaves I immediately declare war on the Hidden Hand and their parties abandon my Army. How do simulated battles work?

Im curious how beneficial terrain bonuses are, the game only describes it in vague terms. like if im going to fight in a forest should i bring a full complement of only infantry bc they are the only ones boosted in it or will i get creamed for trash army composition?
