Declared war on allied mercenaries on load save?

I’m playing as southern Empire, have the Hidden Hand as mercenaries with a couple of their parties in my army. I started a big battle late at night, so half way through quit to go to bed, knowing I’d saved right before the battle anyway like a good little save scummer. Now when I reload any of the precious 3 autosaves I immediately declare war on the Hidden Hand and their parties abandon my Army. What's the best elite infantry when guarding flanks or archers?

Started a fresh run with the Battanians as a noob, roleplaying as a ruthless mercenary. Accidentally discovered the stupidly opness of the fian champion during a 3 to 1 battle where 100 fians decimated a 200 strong empire force with little casualties. And now I want to capitalize on that raw firepower by setting up infantry that can handle the brunt of the assault whilst my fians do the dirtywork. Different cultures can do just as long as it can take a hit and still be standing
