Viking Conquest tips

So I rediscovered VC the other day and realised what an amazing module it is (majority of time spent on Native, ACOK/AWOIAF and NW) does anyone have any tips for starting out so that I can stay ahead of the ruffians and robbers that I keep having to fight by the skin of my teeth to beat? Normal difficulty, and I have nothing but a seax and a pitchfork... If I encounter ruffians with slings and there is 6+ of them, even with bobbing and weaving I keep getting blackbarred just before managing to kill them all. Can't afford the 300 peningas that villiage elders demand to be able to recruit form their village, so I'm stuck on my own at present... which is lonely and my Uhtred the Arseling needs his Leofric :(

Any tips for early game shield/ranged/money acquisition would be majorly helpful at this point.

Back when Bannerlord was announced, I vaguely remember that, in the announcement thread, people were discussing the choice of the title "Bannerlord." Does anyone else remember that?
