How to improve auto resolve outcomes?

I auto-resolve 90% of the fights I get into, what can I do for better results? Should I find 1-2 companions with high tactics skill and keep them in my party? Will that help? Do I have to assign them into any role? There is no slot for tactics role, is it enough if I just keep them in my party? As for sieges, should I keep a companion with high engineering skill and assign him in the engineering slot? I hope it doesn't take too long for this game to leave early access

I really want to mod the crap out of it, but with regular updates it's impossible

I played the game on launch for a while, and now a year later for awhile and tbh it doesn't even seem like much changed? Mind you I love the game I don't mean to sound whiny, I just expected things to be more balanced after a full year.

At least they didn't fix blacksmithing so I can use that to counter the expensive wages that workshops barely even scratch
