Declared war on allied mercenaries on load save?

I’m playing as southern Empire, have the Hidden Hand as mercenaries with a couple of their parties in my army. I started a big battle late at night, so half way through quit to go to bed, knowing I’d saved right before the battle anyway like a good little save scummer. Now when I reload any of the precious 3 autosaves I immediately declare war on the Hidden Hand and their parties abandon my Army. Why do horse archers sometimes start the battle with their sidearms and only change to bows after getting close to the enemy?

This is so annoying... Sometimes horse archers start the battle with their sidearms in hands only to charge to bows after riding closer to the enemy. It wastes time and had they had their bows ready from the start they may had loosened a few more.
