Taking lords prisoner?

Have not played since war sails first released. What’s up with taking lords prisoner now? Before when you’d defeat a party it aways gave you the option, now it seems like half the time they just slip away somehow. How do you erase a kingdom?

I've taken every single fief of the northern empire and have like 90% of the northern empire's commanders as my prisoner. But the war is still going on. What do I need to do? Except chop-choping their heads.
