How to improve auto resolve outcomes?

I auto-resolve 90% of the fights I get into, what can I do for better results? Should I find 1-2 companions with high tactics skill and keep them in my party? Will that help? Do I have to assign them into any role? There is no slot for tactics role, is it enough if I just keep them in my party? As for sieges, should I keep a companion with high engineering skill and assign him in the engineering slot? First time winning vastly outnumbered.

First time winning vastly outnumbered.

The stars aligned and I actually won a siege defense super outnumbered. Like 1700 vs 300. Ai actually targeted enemy siege engines accurately which helped a lot and my console didn’t crash lol. In the end it was just my party with just 11 infantry and a random assortment of 26 archers left holding a flight of stairs and me with like 2 hp and a dream. I know most of you have won crazy battles like this but this one was my first (of many hopefully). The loot was crazy.
