Help With Character (Floris Evolved)

So basically, I have no idea what I'm doing. It's been so long since I've played, I've forgotten everything. Decided to download a mod, try something different.

I want a character that likes to get into the thick of it. Prefer to fight 1h + shield (I guess lance on horseback), throwing weapons as back up. Any guides or tips on what I should be picking? What my stats should be? Do I make the dudes I pick up along the way do everything else? So confused.
