Declared war on allied mercenaries on load save?

I’m playing as southern Empire, have the Hidden Hand as mercenaries with a couple of their parties in my army. I started a big battle late at night, so half way through quit to go to bed, knowing I’d saved right before the battle anyway like a good little save scummer. Now when I reload any of the precious 3 autosaves I immediately declare war on the Hidden Hand and their parties abandon my Army. Modding Villager Party Size

Has anyone been successful in changing villager and caravan party sizes in the XML files? I tried the "partytemplates.xml" file and ramped the numbers up x10 but nothing changed when I started a new campaign.
