So what's the point of alleys now that sneaking missions exist?

I just came back to the game after a year hiatus, and I'm thrilled they finally actually added mechanics rather than just doing endless bug and balance patches that somehow break every mod with every patch. I discovered the sneaking tutorial, and then found out that basically every stealth kill or every other stealth kill gives a level of roguery. (5 focus points) now I'm wondering what's the point of alleys anymore. They were never particularly good, but at least there was an argument to be made that they increased roguery. But now that I can just go farm hideout stealth missions, earn way more money, keep my companions in my party, and not gain crime in the process, I'm wondering what purpose alleys serve anymore? PoP 3.8 tips

So I've recently reinstalled M&B and Prophesy of Pendor. I haven't played PoP since...like, 2011, or something, for Mount and Blade (not warband) and I did eventually beat it back then. However, I've pretty much completely forgotten what I'm doing.

Right now I'm level 10 and have 84 soldiers - rolling with some useless party members (besides Sigismund) who I intend to replace with Knights as soon as possible (Sir Roland, etc). Other than that I've been trying to phase out my Fierdsvain derivatives in favor of decent mercenaries, and I'm going for Ravenstern Archers.

I'm not sure what else to do right now, though - I can't take on any Noldor or significant snake cult/heretic/jaku/etc parties and I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do to bridge the gap between now and when I can actually start taking cities.

Which faction should I join? Should I go mercenary, or just sort of keep fucking around? I know I'd like to eventually take Laria and be friendly with the Noldor, so I'm assuming I don't want to do mercenary work for Sarleon.

I'm not trying to play super min/max style (my character isn't stacking INT/CHA or anything, since I forgot about gems and potions you get later), but I would like to be able to accomplish stuff.

What sort of army should I try to build up, ideally? What faction do you guys usually do mercenary work for initially?

Thanks in advance or any advice. I'd forgotten how awesome this mod is, but I'm sort of stuck right now.
