I hate Horse Archers

Why did I decide to sign up with the northern empire as a Merc whilst they were fighting the Khuzaits? I've never fought them before and the one time I don't go with a decent horse rider because I want to fight on foot, this happens. How to play as heir while im still alive

So my character is a king with a large size of land. Other than fending off invasions and provoking wars i dont have much to do. I kind want to switch control to my son when he comes of age and have my old character continue to rule the kingdom while i go off and adventure a bit. Is that possible via mods or in the vanilla game?
